Digital Minimalism in Practice
Dumb Phones: What Holds Up in Daily Use
A fair look at minimal phones, hybrid setups, and the cheaper option most people should try first.

Minimal phones are having a moment, and most of the coverage is either evangelism or mockery. Here is the boring middle: they solve a real problem, they create new friction, and there's a cheaper experiment worth running first.
The cheaper experiment
Before you buy hardware, strip the phone you own. Remove every feed app, turn off the browser if your OS allows it, put a launcher on it that shows text instead of icons, and live with it for two weeks. Most of the benefit people attribute to dumb phones comes from this.
Where minimal phones genuinely win
- No app store means no re-installing at 11pm on a bad night.
- Battery life measured in days changes your relationship with the charger.
- The device stops being entertaining, which is the entire point.
Where they hurt
Maps, two-factor authentication, ride-hailing, banking apps, boarding passes and group chats. Plan for each of these before you switch, or you'll be back within a fortnight — and you'll conclude, wrongly, that you 'can't do it'.
The hybrid most people land on
A minimal phone for evenings and weekends, and a stripped smartphone kept in a drawer for logistics. Less pure, far more sustainable.
