I Deleted Instagram and Nothing Magical Happened

A reader on the unglamorous version of quitting a feed — and the small thing that did change.

Anonymous, 34

I expected the first week to feel like a montage. It felt like standing in a lift with nothing to look at. That was it. No clarity, no sudden creativity, just a lot of unfilled seconds and mild irritation.

What changed showed up in the third week, and it was boring: I started finishing books again. Not more books — the same ones I'd been carrying around for months. It turned out I hadn't lost interest in reading, I'd just been spending the reading-shaped parts of my day elsewhere.

I reinstalled it once, in an airport, and deleted it again the next day without much drama. I think that's the real result. It stopped being a decision with weight attached.
